| Year-long Public Conversation to Discuss Transportation Issues |
|
On Oct. 13, the City Council agreed to form a partnership with the Hampton Roads Center for Civic Engagement to hold a series of public meetings on these issues. The center is a local nonprofit group dedicated to improving communications between citizens and their government. We have no dates yet, but we will announce them very soon in City Page. Coincidentally, this happens at the same time Hampton Roads Transit is studying mass transit alternatives from Newtown Road to the Oceanfront, including light rail transit. This is not part of the light rail study. This conversation will be a broad-based discussion about all transportation options in Virginia Beach and the region. This collaboration will include meetings, lectures and other opportunities to engage in meaningful discussion. We want the conversation to be as open and objective as possible. We want to look at every mode of transportation that gets people around Virginia Beach and Hampton Roads – highways, roads, bridges, tunnels, buses, light rail, bicycles, pedestrian paths and more. The plan is to engage citizens via small group meetings, citizen-made videos, online comments and reports. We will communicate with citizens via quarterly updates in writing and by video – on the Web and VBTV. At the end of the process, we will share a written report. Watch this space for more information including meeting times and places. For more information, call the Hampton Roads Center for Civic Engagement at 889-9359.
