When transportation becomes recreation PDF Print E-mail

Once horses were essential for getting around our area, but now they are not part of what we think of as transportation.  Bicycling, on the other hand, is both a serious means of work-related transportation and a form of recreation for health and fun.  Some of the infrastructure can support both purposes, but sometimes these different needs are in competition for resources.

Boating is still an important part of Virginia Beach culture, from yachts to canoes, but not so much as a means of getting from place to place.  Boating infrastructure includes dredging, maintenance of water trails, boat launch facilities, and rescue services.  Here too, there are questions about whether public resources should be used now that boats are not an essential means of transportation within Virginia Beach.
