Transportation as culture PDF Print E-mail

Transportation has emotional and even mythical aspects that can influence our decisions about the best path for the future. Many of the indelible images of the 20th century involve vehicles of one sort or another. Rosa Parks' refusal to accept segregated public transit became the catalyst for the civil rights movement. The Joad family's journey from Oklahoma encapsulated the Depression.

Car ads have redefined our desires and even our self image, fostering dreams of rugged independence or wealth and luxury. Auto racing, more than many sports, has become a cultural icon. Motels, drive in movies, fast food and drive up windows are among the unintended consequences of the automobile.

We can do a better job of talking through choices for the future if we acknowledge these influences and examine what of them we hold dear and what may be more superficial.

"Ultimately St. Dale is a story about people's search for something to believe in.”
