changeWe're evolving...

Following the successful completion of this project earlier this year, a group of citizens and city officials told HRCCE that they'd like to see Envision Transportation become an ongoing effort to bring citizens and their local government together to continue to learn about and analyse possibilities for the future of transportation in Virginia Beach.

Next meeting WEDNESDAY, Jan. 4, 5:30pm, Virginia Beach Community Development Corporation office, 2400 Potters Road, Suite 300.  February meeting tentatively Monday Feb.6, 2012, depending on the City Manager's availability.  Mike will check with Mr. Spore.

We will use the January meeting to refine, organize and prioritize what we've learned in preparation for the meeting with the City Manager.  Look for instances where what we want is happening so we can say positively, build on this success.    We observed that since state and federal regulations are loosening, the critical question is how committed the city is on its own without regulatory prodding.

HRPTA & HRTPO
Carolyn explained that these two regional organizations need Virginia Beach members.  We think both meet less than monthly.

The HR Public Transportation Alliance, http://hrpta.com/  chaired by Randy Wright, is a non-governmental group pursuing education and advocacy for public transit.  It was very involved with the Tide

The HR Transportation Planning Organization, http://www.hrtpo.org/  headed by Dwight Farmer, has representatives from the region's cities and decides on the local uses of federal transportation funding.   It has a Citizen Transportation Advisory Committee which includes Ray Taylor who talked about how much that group had worked on becoming educated on transportation.

Next meeting Oct. 3, 5:30pm, Virginia Beach Community Development Corporation office,
2400 Potters Road, Suite 300.  We noted that Jeryl Phillips was to head up the City's new Complete Streets program, but Todd talked to her and learned that Mark Schnaufer is now going to be the lead on this project.  We'd like to bring Mark back to talk to us about Complete Streets, but October may be too soon since he will be new to the lead position, and since we need to finish the work from the Sept meeting.

We opened with discussion of the proposed bike lane along Shore Drive. There is concern among current cyclists on Shore Drive over retaining the rumble strips in their current location. This creates a barrier that is difficult and sometimes unsafe for cyclists to cross such as when needing to merge into the travel lane to pass other cyclists or avoid debris. A large swath of the current users are expressing a preference for a simple 4-5 ft shoulder with unimpeded access between it and the travel lane. The Bikeways and Trails Advisory Committee will address this.

envision

The Hampton Roads Center for Civic Engagement, in partnership with the City of Virginia Beach has started a new public conversation about transportation possibilities and their far-reaching impacts.

This project combines the power of visual imagery, new means of information distribution, and the extraordinary value of involving the community in imagining its transportation future.

During the process, citizens will have opportunities to outline future choices and express their preferences.

You can be part of this discussion! Just click on any of the many links and menu items on this page to learn more.
